Even if you weren’t tossing the virtual pigskin around during the last couple weeks, you had plenty to get excited about. Well, on the last day of the month, at least…. Game of the Month on August 2010 is a coveted award, and it’s not given out lightly. That’s why you’ll see some gaps on the list below. There were some decent games for the blank platforms in August, but nothing blew our minds. We’re positive that next month will be a different story.

PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Madden NFL 11
The perennial all-star reigned supreme once again in August, bringing a slew of gameplay refinements and changes that helped deliver some of the best videogame football of this generation. Even though we weren’t huge fans of GameFlow’s automated playcalling mechanic or the lack of feature additions, that doesn’t mean that this year’s Madden didn’t pack plenty of punch in the gameplay department. Not only that, but the new Online Team Play provided some of the best virtual football experiences we’ve ever had. There’s something incredibly rewarding about getting two friends to play on your team with you and run up the score on some poor fools across the country. It’s a feeling that only Madden NFL 11 can provide.

You got StarCraft II last month, and now you want another great game? After all the PC gaming industry has given you? We cannot believe your insolence. You’ll get nothing, and you’ll like it.

Metroid: Other M
Metroid: Other M is the official continuation of the Metroid series that takes over from 1994’s Super Metroid on the SNES. It’s is a huge step forward for Nintendo, a company that’s been reluctant to push story over gameplay. This is an excellent experience with great, intense action and an engaging story that turns one of Nintendo’s beloved characters into something more than a kick-ass bounty hunter.

Nintendo is too busy building 3Ds handhelds in its top-secret laboratories to worry about making totally sweet DS and DSi games. We reccommend buying a PSP instead, just to play our Game of the Month for that system.

And Yet it Moves
WiiWare has been getting a lot of cool indie PC game ports lately, and while And Yet it Moves is one of those, it’s also a game that is perfectly suited to the Wii. Using the tilt controls of the Wii remote, players rotate the entire world so they can climb mountains and cross huge chasms, and even defeat murderous horned toads with laser eyes. It’s a unique, fresh, and challenging platformer with a bizarre art style and a weird sense of humor. Credit goes to developer Broken Rules for breathing life into a stale genre.

Valkyria Chronicles II
Sometimes, life makes it easy to pick a game of the month. Take a successful, beloved PS3 game, give it a well-rounded sequel, add in multiplayer, and shove it on the PSP. That’s what happened with Valkyria Chronicles II, and we’re damn glad it did. Once again, you’ll select troops on a 2D map, drop into a third-person view, and take on all comers in an awesome strategy RPG. Plus, the girls are all super-cute anime drawings. Score.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World
The Scott Pilgrim movie might not have done so hot in theaters, but the game blew our doors off. Combining 16-bit-like visuals, a rocking chip-tunes score and plenty of throwbacks to the books that made the Pilgrim name, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a standout PSN game for folks looking to drift back to the days of multiplayer, side-scrolling beat’em ups. You can level up, fight evil exes and even pay off Scott’s video store late fees. Just beware of bread. It makes you fat.

Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light
It doesn’t have the words “tomb” or “raider” in the title, but Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is the best Tomb Raider game in a long time. With a great new look, clever puzzles, and loads of fun stuff to collect, this is an extreme makeover for Lara of which you will surely approve. Developer Crystal Dynamics is really onto something here. More, please.

Osmos is the best game you can download right now for the iPad. And on the iPhone, it’s easily in the top five. In this ambient puzzler, you tap to propel a hungry orb through minefields of meaner orbs. The goal is always the same: consume. Eat to get big. Getting big is sometimes enough to complete the stage. Sometimes you have to get big enough to swallow up a bad guy. Throw in a haunting soundtrack, ingenious stage design, and excellent controls, and you have a must-buy for your iPhone.

It is also rumored to feature fairly large display — about 3.7 to 4.1 inches – and a 5 megapixel camera powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Aesthetically, it will allegedly have a primarily black design with silver highlights and the slider panel will be either white or silver.

As far as graphics are concerned, the new device is reported to be capable of delivering PSX or PSP quality graphics. The Sony Ericsson gaming smartphone could arrive as early as October, though specific release information could not be obtained.
