During the latest episode of their “BlizzCast” podcast, StarCraft 2 producer Chris Sigaty revealed some good news for long-patient StarCraft fans: It’s still Blizzard’s intention to release StarCraft 2 in the first half of 2010…even if that means shortening the beta more than they originally planned.
“We were targeting three to five months for the beta, we’re really at a three month period of time for the beta at this point. We are still targeting the first half of this year… [for release],” Sigaty said during the podcast (via Shacknews). Their original time-span for the beta would have put the release of StarCraft 2 into the second half of the year at the earliest, but with three months (counting February, perhaps, as the first month), that would have it ending by around April, and leave May and June to institute any tweaks, balancing, or bug-fixing and have the game out on store shelves. It may not be your own, it may not be your friend’s or neighbor’s, but somewhere in the world at this very moment a Wii Zapper is shedding a single tear. For it has observed the Ghostbusters-themed Wii proton pack mod-case above, and knows it is so far superior that all Zappers might as well kill themselves in response.
This mod showed up on the Ghostbusters Fan forums (via Engadget), presumably made by image poster “irrelevanttomfoolery.” As you can see in the second picture below, it does indeed come with the full proton pack to strap on, and evidently “the Blue Power Cell actually shows you how much power the pack has.” Continue reading »

Bells and whistles. In some cases, that’s all that separates the (in tech years) eons-old Windows XP from spry upstarts like Windows 7 and, to a lesser extent, Windows Vista. But – like it or not – the bell may be tolling for Windows XP. At least, if you’re a gamer, anyway. Fittingly enough, Just Cause 2, a game about revolutions and, er, parachuting, is leading the charge.
“There is no XP support for Just Cause 2. This is because the game has been written to take advantage of the extra performance offered by Direct X10 and sadly Windows XP does not support that application,” Square Enix Community Manager Mike Oldman told VE3D. Continue reading »

We’ve heard many adjectives used to describe DLC. This, however, we think is a first. “Aggressive” DLC doesn’t sound like something we’d purchase, so much as we’d restrain it by luring it onto our PCs using money as bait. Then, with its fury temporarily caged, we’d try with all our might to beat the content before it could burst free from our hard drives and swallow us whole.
We don’t think that’s quite what 2K has in mind, however.
“2K Games announced today an aggressive post-launch downloadable content plan for BioShock 2 that extends and enhances the single and multiplayer experiences by adding more glimpses into the award-winning world of Rapture,” said the publisher in a press release. Continue reading »

When Electronic Arts revealed that their new Medal of Honor would be set in the war in Afghanistan (and it was subsequently revealed they may have even based the cover soldier on a real-life soldier), it raised understandable fears that the game would exploit a war that’s still being waged and claiming lives to this day. But speaking in an interview with IncGamers (via VG247), EA LA’s Sean Decker said it’s a danger they’re mindful of, and absolutely trying to avoid.
“I think, again, it was trying to stay out of all the politics,” Decker said. “It’s not going to be a big propaganda piece where we wave the flag, or anything like that. It’s literally about the people that’re on the ground.”
Decker compared the game’s apolitical viewpoint to another recent example of art dealing with a currently waging war: Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. Continue reading »

Microsoft announced at their X10 event earlier this month that Game Room, Toy Soldiers, Scrap Metal, and Perfect Dark would all be rolled into a promotional event in March they’re calling “Xbox Live Block Party” (not to be confused with Dave Chappelle’s Block Party). Now they’ve announced specific release dates and prices for each game, along with a couple of promotional offers to back them up.
Starting things off will be Toy Soldiers — a strategy game starring, of all things, toy soldiers — on March 3 for 1200 Microsoft points ($15). Next is Scrap Metal, the new game from developer N+, on March 10 for another 1200 points. Then it’s arguably the biggest draw of the month, Rare’s XBL port of Perfect Dark, which hits March 17 for 800 points ($10). And finally the month of releases wraps up with Game Room on March 24, which will be free to download, but individual arcade games within it will run you $3-$5 dollars. Continue reading »
