Rumors of a forthcoming PSP Phone have been brewing for years, despite rigorous denials from Sony, but now a new report suggests that the company is currently working on an Android-powered gaming smartphone under its mobile communications arm, Sony Ericsson.

Citing sources close to the project, Engadget is reporting that Sony Ericsson is currently in the late stages of development of a new smartphone that will establish an expanded gaming platform on Google’s open-source Android operating system. The device has been described as a amalgamation of the Samsung Captivate and the PSPgo, and will feature a slide out panel which will house game controls such as a D-pad, action buttons, should buttons, and a touch pad for analog control. It is also rumored to feature fairly large display — about 3.7 to 4.1 inches – and a 5 megapixel camera powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Aesthetically, it will allegedly have a primarily black design with silver highlights and the slider panel will be either white or silver.

As far as graphics are concerned, the new device is reported to be capable of delivering PSX or PSP quality graphics. Engadget’s sources also say that the device will be PlayStation-branded and it is currently being demoed with existing titles from the PSX and PSP, but new mobile titles in the God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Little Big Planet franchises may be developed for the platform. A key PlayStation Move-compatible title won’t be launching until 2011. Zipper Interactive confirmed today on their official website that SOCOM 4 has been delayed.

While the game was playable at both GDC and E3, it seems that it wasn’t quite ready. Zipper didn’t say why the game has been delayed, but they did say that they didn’t want to take “any shortcuts.”

“Instead, we want to deliver the best and most immersive SOCOM game we possibly can and we’re going to use our extra time to do just that,” Zipper Interactive community manager Jeremy Dunham wrote.

SOCOM 4 was originally slated for this fall, making it a key cog in the launch of the PlayStation Move. While SOCOM 4 doesn’t have an official release date, the new 2011 window puts it close to Killzone 3, which is slated for next February.

We’ll let you know when Zipper announces a new release date.

Other updates include a new rating system for PlayStation Store content, and additional power save settings.

PlayStation Plus, which was confirmed during E3, comprises the bulk of the new content. The subscription service will offer early access to demos, discounts and free access to a variety of games for $49.99 per year. Continue reading »

Looks like Top Gun won’t be the only Tom Cruise classic to be arriving on the PlayStation 3 this summer. Paramount Digital Pictures is making a game based on Days of Thunder as well.

Days of Thunder: Nascar Edition will feature real-life drivers Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart alongside the drivers from the original movie.

“Racing against NASCAR drivers such as Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin and ‘Days of Thunder’ characters Cole Trickle, Rowdy Burns, and Russ Wheeler simultaneously is something that could only happen in a video game, and a great way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film,” said Paramount Digital Entertainment president Tom Lesinski.

The AI will be tailored to the individual skills of the drivers, so you’ll have to watch out for “Cole Trickle’s reckless, aggressive driving, Rowdy Burns’ ruthless, veteran skills and Russ Wheeler’s hot head.”

Other features include car customization options, bonus tracks, and in-game currency that is earned by picking up sponsors. It will feature an online mode support up to 12 racers. Continue reading »
